I want to mitigate my project's integration risks.

Nobody likes red flags on a project schedule. However, some risks are unavoidable and at the very least we, as project managers, try to predict and quantify them, incorporating them in the risk management plan accordingly.

That's all very straight forward with true risk, that is "known unknowns" - things we know that we don't know. As we are all aware, this is significantly harder (if not impossible) to achieve when dealing with uncertainty - that is "unknown unknowns" - things we don't know that we don't know.

Collective experience indicates to us that integration implementation tasks are seldom recognised for the risk they truly represent to the schedule. Inclusion as a line item on a risk and issues register doesn't necessarily help when an integration activity spirals out of control - with far reaching consequences to dependencies across the project.
